Istanbul : our second interview

Après quelques jours pluvieux à Istanbul, nous nous réjouissons de notre seconde interview. Su Yücel nous convie dans son atelier: en plein centre de la rue Istiklal, dans le quartier très animé de Taksim. Su est née à Londres, a étudié aux Beaux-Arts de Strasbourg. C'est donc dans en français que l'interview sera menée.

Pour arriver dans l'atelier de Su, nous nous engouffrons dans une galerie marchande, montons dans une cage d'escalier. De nombreux appartements sont aménagés en cafés, invisibles de l'extérieur. L'atelier de Su est là, tableaux aux murs, parquet clair et vue sur la rue animée. Nous commençons l'interview. En contre-jour, toujours...il y a des progrès à faire.

After a few more rainy days in Istanbul, we are eager to meet our second artist. Su Yücel invited us to her workshop : in the middle of Istiklal Street, the busy neighborhood of Taksim. Su was born in London and studied Fine Arts in Strasburg, France. That is why we conducted this interview in French.

To get to Su’s workshop, we have to go through a gallery and up a few flights of stairs. Many of the apartments are actually cafes which cannot be seen from the outside. Su’s workshop has a bright wooden floor, with lots of paintings hanging from the wall and a beautiful view on Istiklal Street. Once again, our interview is conducted with backlighting...but we will improve our technique, don’t worry.

En "off", comme nous l'avions constaté avec Kemal, il est plus facile de parler d'un si vaste sujet, au détour de quelques anecdotes. La prochaine fois, nous enverrons au préalable les questions aux artistes afin qu'ils aient le temps d'y réfléchir.

Su nous raconte le projet qu'elle a monté à Sulukule, un quartier Rrom à Istanbul, dont les autorités avaient annoncé la démolition imminente. Elle a mis le pinceau entre les mains de ces femmes et ces hommes.

After the interview, as we noticed with Kemal, lots of interesting anecdotes and stories are told. Next time, we will send the questions to the artists beforehand, so that they can think about it.
Su told us all about her project in a district of Istanbul inhabited by Romani people, Sulukule, which is going to be destroyed by the administration. Through painting, she allowed these men and women to express themselves.

Arrivée à Istanbul sous un ciel d'un bleu vibrant. Le temps d'oublier un manteau dans la carcasse, d'attendre quelques heures l'objet tant convoité qui lui-même nous attendait autre part, la nuit est tombée sur la ville.

À la question de la dualité d'Istanbul: Orient/Occident, Europe/Asie, société moderne/traditionnelle, ce sont d'abord les bâtiments futuristes jonchés sur la route de l'aéroport qui répondent.
Puis, alors que nous roulons vers le centre, les minarets phosphorescents répliquent.

Nous dînons dans un restaurant au pied de la Mosquée bleue avant de nous mettre en route pour la première interview avec le musicien Kemal Arslan.

When we land in Istanbul's Attatürk Airport, the sun is still shining. A few hours of waiting for a misplaced coat later, the sun is gone.

After having contemplated the unique mix of modern skyscrapers and old mosques during our ride to the hotel, we start preparing our first interview with musician Kemal Arslan.

Après l'avoir interviewé, nous lui demandons de nous présenter un objet qui à ses yeux fait partie intégrante de son identité: il nous amène son instrument traditionnel, mais dans sa version électrique moderne.

After having interviewed him, we asked him to show us an object which he feels is part of his identity: he chose his traditional instrument, but in its updated electric version.



Pour finir, voici la vue de la fenêtre de son salon. Cette vidéo symbolise l'ouverture sur le monde mais également la subjectivité avec laquelle chacun de nous perçoit le monde qui l'entoure.
